Analytics Setup

Turning raw traffic data into business intelligence. Tracking configuration that captures meaningful behaviour and enables strategic decision-making.

Intelligence That Informs Decisions

Your website generates data constantly. Every visitor arrives through some channel. Every page receives views. Every action taken—or not taken—reveals something about user behaviour. This data is potentially invaluable business intelligence. But potential is not actuality. Raw data sitting in analytics platforms provides no insight until it is configured properly, interpreted correctly, and connected to business questions that matter.

Most websites have analytics installed. Few have analytics configured to provide actionable insight. The default Google Analytics installation tracks pageviews—a vanity metric that tells you almost nothing useful. Meaningful analytics requires deliberate setup that captures the behaviour you care about and organises it to answer questions you actually have.

At AstonMiles Media, analytics setup transforms data collection from default tracking into purposeful intelligence gathering. We configure analytics to capture what matters, structure it for interpretation, and provide the foundation for data-informed decision making.

Beyond Pageviews

Pageviews are the most basic analytics metric—and among the least useful. Knowing that your website received a thousand pageviews yesterday tells you almost nothing actionable. Were those views from potential customers or irrelevant visitors? Did viewers find what they needed or leave frustrated? Did any business value result from those views? Pageviews alone cannot answer these questions.

Meaningful analytics captures engagement depth. Time on page indicates whether visitors actually consume content or bounce immediately. Scroll depth reveals whether long pages are read completely or abandoned partway. These engagement signals distinguish valuable visits from superficial ones.

Meaningful analytics tracks conversions. Form submissions, product purchases, file downloads, button clicks—the actions that represent business value are configured as conversion events. When you know which visits produce conversions, you can optimise for more of those visits specifically.

Meaningful analytics identifies user journeys. Which pages do visitors see before converting? Which pages do they see before leaving? Understanding the paths that lead to desired outcomes enables optimisation of those paths. Understanding where visitors abandon enables improvement of those friction points.

This depth requires configuration beyond default installation. Out of the box, analytics platforms track pageviews and little else. The meaningful metrics require explicit setup.

GA4 Configuration

Google Analytics 4 is the current standard for website analytics. Its event-based model offers flexibility that earlier versions lacked—but also requires more deliberate configuration to realise that flexibility.

Property setup establishes the basic tracking infrastructure. Data streams connect your website to GA4. Basic configuration options—data retention, measurement protocol, and similar settings—are configured appropriately for your needs.

Event configuration captures meaningful interactions. GA4 automatically tracks some events, but the interactions most relevant to your business typically require custom event setup. We identify the actions that represent value and configure tracking to capture them.

Conversion marking identifies which events represent business goals. Not every tracked action is a conversion; conversions are the subset that matter most. We configure conversion events to reflect your actual business objectives.

Audience definition segments visitors meaningfully. Visitors who converted versus those who did not. Visitors from specific channels. Visitors who viewed specific content. These audience definitions enable analysis that reveals differences between visitor segments.

Reporting configuration surfaces relevant data efficiently. Default reports may not answer your specific questions. Custom reports and dashboards present the metrics that matter to your business in formats that support decision-making.

Google Tag Manager

Google Tag Manager provides the implementation layer that makes sophisticated tracking possible. Rather than adding tracking code directly to your website for each tool and event, Tag Manager centralises management and enables flexibility.

Tag Manager setup establishes the container and basic configuration. The container code is installed on your website. Fundamental settings are configured appropriately.

Tag implementation adds tracking for various tools through Tag Manager rather than direct code. Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, LinkedIn Insight, conversion tracking for advertising platforms—each is implemented as a managed tag.

Trigger configuration determines when tags fire. Page loads, button clicks, form submissions, scroll thresholds—the conditions that activate tracking are configured precisely. Accurate triggers ensure data is captured reliably.

Variable setup captures dynamic information. Page titles, form field values, product details—variables extract information that makes tracking data meaningful. Without variables, events are captured but context is lost.

This infrastructure enables ongoing flexibility. New tracking requirements can be addressed through Tag Manager configuration without website code changes. The implementation layer provides capability that direct coding would make cumbersome.

Conversion Tracking

Conversion tracking connects website activity to business outcomes. Without it, analytics shows activity without indicating value. With it, you understand which activity produces results.

Goal configuration defines what counts as conversion. Form submissions, purchases, downloads, specific page views—the actions representing value to your business are configured as tracked goals.

E-commerce tracking captures transaction details for online sales. Revenue, transaction counts, product performance—the metrics that e-commerce businesses need are configured to flow into analytics.

Attribution connects conversions to their sources. Which marketing channels drive conversions? Which campaigns produce results? Attribution data enables marketing optimisation by revealing what works.

Value assignment quantifies conversion worth where possible. A lead enquiry might be worth estimated revenue based on conversion rates. Assigning values enables return-on-investment analysis that pure conversion counts cannot provide.

Privacy Compliance

Analytics must respect privacy regulations. GDPR and similar laws require informed consent for non-essential tracking. Cookie banners and consent management must integrate with analytics implementation.

Consent mode configuration adjusts analytics behaviour based on user consent choices. Users who consent receive full tracking. Users who decline receive limited or no tracking. The configuration respects user choices whilst collecting available data.

Data minimisation ensures analytics collects only what is needed. Avoiding personally identifiable information where possible. Configuring IP anonymisation. Limiting data retention appropriately. Privacy-respecting analytics builds trust whilst providing insight.

We implement analytics in compliance with privacy requirements. The intelligence you gain comes without legal risk or user trust erosion.

Dashboard and Reporting

Collected data provides value only when accessible and interpretable. Dashboards and reports present analytics in formats that enable understanding and action.

Custom dashboards surface key metrics at a glance. The numbers you check regularly are presented together, eliminating navigation through multiple reports. Dashboard design reflects your priorities—not default configurations that may not match your needs.

Regular reports deliver insights on appropriate schedules. Monthly summaries, weekly updates, or other cadences that suit your decision-making rhythm. Reports highlight changes and trends rather than simply restating raw numbers.

Annotation and context make data meaningful. Numbers without context are difficult to interpret. Notes on marketing campaigns, website changes, and external events help explain data patterns.

Intelligence That Informs

Analytics setup from AstonMiles Media transforms data collection into business intelligence. Meaningful metrics are captured. Conversions are tracked. Privacy is respected. Insights are accessible.

Your website generates data continuously. Analytics setup ensures that data becomes intelligence you can use.
